The Rejected Movie Theater
Innovative film project strengthens cultural life in smaller towns
About the project
The project De refuserades filmsalong aims to create vibrant culture and new encounters in smaller towns in eastern Skåne. Through 50 short film screenings during 2026–2027, the audience is invited to film experiences followed by conversations – sometimes even with filmmakers on site. The screenings are arranged in collaboration with community centers, Folkets Hus and other local actors.
The focus is on films that otherwise do not reach an audience, often rejected submissions to short film festivals. By showing these films, the selection is broadened and more voices are given a place. The project wants to arouse interest in the short film medium and create encounters between generations and perspectives, especially in areas where cultural offerings are limited.
The initiative has been tested on a smaller scale with good response and is supported by, among others, ABF, the Swedish Film Association, the National Association of Rural Homesteads and People's House and Parks. Behind the initiative are Mattias Olsson and Bronson Månsson at Accent Kultur och Media.
By using short films as conversation starters, the project challenges traditional concepts of quality and contributes to a more inclusive and democratic cultural life - while keeping local meeting places alive.

The board's assessment
Decision date: 2025-06-18
Total selection criteria: 490 points
The board's justification: The board believes that the project is positive from several aspects. There are several target groups that benefit. Refused filmmakers get an arena. Community centers and other meeting places can offer a wider range of options to their visitors. People in marginalization can find their context and the networks that are formed. Open conversations will be held and an increased understanding of each other's differences will be one of the effects. Based on this, it is believed that the project will contribute to many positive effects in the countryside.
