Kivik – hub for research and development in cultural heritage
Cultural heritage as a driver for development at Kivik

The project "Kivik - hub for research and development in cultural heritage" was carried out as a feasibility study with the goal of strengthening cultural heritage tourism in Kivik and Österlen in a long-term sustainable way. The starting point was the unique cultural-historical environment of Kivik Museum and Kiviksgraven and the need for a new, accessible meeting place for research, associations, companies and international collaborations.
Through broad collaboration between museums, cultural heritage actors, associations, businesses, researchers and authorities, possibilities regarding premises, building permits, financing and future operations were investigated. The project showed that there is strong local commitment and a clear demand for a common gathering place that can accommodate a museum, café, meetings and research.
A particularly important result was the development of the Nordic region's first mobile, interdisciplinary research lab – a lab trailer that makes research accessible throughout the landscape and creates new forms of collaboration, public activity and innovation. The feasibility study also identified sustainable financing solutions and laid the foundation for continued development.
The project created strong roots, new networks and a clear path forward to make Kivik a vibrant hub for cultural heritage, research and local development.

The board's assessment
Decision date: 2024-11-11
Total selection criteria: 930 points
The board's justification: The board believes that the core of the project is based on the so-called DNA of the Leader method, where ”those who live and work in a place also know best how that place can be developed in the best way”. When you cooperate and realize local assets and conditions, the foundation is laid for community and the development of sustainable and attractive areas. The project application is well in line with this intention. In addition, the board believes that feasibility studies are important to ensure that future initiatives are implemented in the right place and way, and with the right price tag.
