Marine educational activities

Students who may not always seem to be that engaged in school come alive when they come here. It's usually more fun when it's practical work, but it also shows the importance of the place for learning.

The aim was to establish a marine educational activity with activities close to the sea in Ystad to increase interest among children and young people in sustainable development of the Baltic Sea.

The project developed educational programs and created creative, stimulating and challenging learning environments. The educational programs covered everything from the Baltic Sea's plant and animal species, the water cycle and coastal erosion to what happens to precipitation and what it means to be a fisherman or to work as a marine biologist. Through collaboration with Lund and Gothenburg universities, the students' samples could also be used for research purposes. In parallel, all educators in Ystad municipality were offered separate further training in the different programs.

During the project period, approximately 3,200 children and students from preschool to high school participated in one of the age-appropriate activities. Classes from Sjöbo and Simrishamn were also invited to participate in the programs, and a summer holiday activity, open to all, attracted a total of 250 participants of various ages.

The project achieved its goal: to create an activity where children, young people and educators can follow the various events of the sea and the beach on site. Through the educational activities, interest, understanding and knowledge of life in the Baltic Sea and the ecosystem services we receive from the sea were increased. Thanks to the project, the participants gained increased environmental awareness and an understanding of the importance of their own role and significance for sustainable development. The project became a permanent activity in Ystad Municipality after a decision by the municipal council.

The project is fully in line with our local development strategy with initiatives that contribute to increased knowledge and interest in sustainability issues and human impact on the ocean among children and young people. The project creates the conditions for a more sustainable society. The project also creates a job opportunity.
