Development of
Kjugekull outdoor museum

A new exhibition will highlight Kjugekull's unique geology, nature, and climbing culture

About the project

The Regional Museum of Skåne is running a project to renew the outdoor museum at Kjugekull, the nature reserve between Ivösjön and Oppmannasjön, northeast of Kristianstad. The area is a well-visited excursion destination with high natural and cultural historical values and attracts bouldering enthusiasts from all over Europe. The current exhibition from 1985 is outdated and will be replaced with a modern exhibition that better reflects the significance of the site – both geologically and as a climbing destination. The aim is to strengthen Kjugekull as a meeting place and promote outdoor life, public health, and tourism.

The project is locally anchored and is being carried out in collaboration with associations, municipalities, and authorities. In November 2025, a workshop on the theme ”geological values and bouldering” was held with geologists, biologists, and experienced climbers, among others. One purpose was to increase understanding between the groups and discuss how sensitive boulders can be protected during climbing.

In 2026, designers and educators from primary schools and SFI will delve into the users' perspectives, after which the work will continue to shape the exhibition, which will also be translated into English. The old exhibition will be dismantled, with some parts possibly being recycled, and an inauguration is planned for spring 2027.

Bouldering = the simplest form of climbing where one climbs without ropes, harnesses, nuts, and carabiners, from the English ”boulder” (boulder).

The board's assessment

Decision date: 2024-04-22
Total selection criteria: 690 points
The board's justification: The core of the project is based on the Leader program's so-called DNA ”those who live and work in a place also know best how that place can be developed in the best way.” When collaborating and realizing local assets and conditions, the foundation for community and the development of sustainable and attractive areas is laid. The project application aligns well with this intention and will surely create ripples. Since a representative from the preparation group has made field visits, we share the view that an update is needed.
