We must utilize valuable expertise in traditional methods to restore old buildings with cultural and historical value.

The purpose was to create a feasibility study on skills supply within construction trades in southeast Skåne, as these valuable skills are at risk of disappearing.

The educational situation for traditional building crafts has been in a pinch in the Swedish education system, as construction education focuses almost entirely on new production and craft education focuses more on small crafts. Traded knowledge about both materials and techniques is being lost and the main purpose of the feasibility study was therefore to investigate the possibility of starting a specialized education with a focus on traditional craft and building methods (building maintenance).

The project initiated several collaborations between planners, education providers, the construction industry and property owners.

The project used the following three methods to answer the feasibility study questions:

1. Information search and compilation of existing studies, forecasts and reports.
2. Surveys for target groups – craftsmen, students and property owners.
3. Follow-up and dialogue meetings (locally) with craftsmen.

The project's activities resulted in a report, which was intended to form the basis for creating one or more post-secondary education programs in the leader area. At the end of the project, the Craftsmanship Apprenticeship program in Cultural Historical Building Technology was started at Sjöbo Adult Education.

The aim of the project is to preserve endangered skills by investigating the possibilities of creating a vocational training which is fully in line with the local development strategy. The project contributes to fulfilling the objectives of the Rural Development Programme by promoting knowledge transfer and innovation in rural areas.
