Sustainable seafood through care fishing

The project was implemented in LEADER Southeastern Skåne during the 2014-2024 programming period.

We want to produce the world's most sustainable fish products while restoring our lakes' ecosystems!

About the project

The purpose of this project was to find out how the catch of the carp fish that is landed in connection with care fishing can be effectively utilized as food, while the fish becomes a resource to finance a better water environment.

Activities

Necessary information for achieving sustainable management and preparation of the fish was obtained through own investigations, study visits to facilities in Finland, and in contact with various stakeholders. Based on the results that emerged, as well as assessed operational needs, consultants developed a tailored, energy-efficient, and food-approved facility. Permits, emissions, and necessary treatment of process water were also investigated, and simultaneously a consultant conducted a market analysis and maintained ongoing contact with the food industry.

Results

The most important conclusions resulted in a report along with a description of the problem statement and a market analysis for the intended products. The report provides a general picture of how a processing facility and food line can look and can, with certain adjustments, be located in different geographical areas. It describes what permits are required and how process water should be treated and how the logistics from lake to processing facility should be designed.

During the project, knowledge about eutrophication, environmental care, and carp fish as food was conveyed through various meetings and workshops. The project also resulted in broader networks of stakeholders who are connected to environmental care, research, and the food industry in various ways.
