Together for healthier water in Hanö Bay

Tre personer står i skogsmiljö medan en man pekar ut något i terrängen, omgivna av grönska och träd

All watercourses that flow into Hanö Bay affect the sea. Today they contribute to eutrophication, browner water and reduced biodiversity. This project aimed to reverse this trend – through cleaner watercourses, healthier ecosystems and new opportunities for tourism, business and employment in the area.

The project built on previous collaboration around Hanö Bay and brought together water councils, coastal councils, municipalities, landowners and other stakeholders in a joint effort. The goal was to strengthen cooperation, increase local commitment and, above all, speed up the implementation of important water conservation measures.

A comprehensive mapping and analysis was carried out of the status of the watercourses, ongoing measures and how the work is organised. The results show that a lot of knowledge and commitment already exists, but also clear challenges. Local commitment and funding need to be strengthened, and the action work needs better coordination and support.

The feasibility study therefore identified the need for a new support structure – an Action Accelerator. The next step is to establish this support function, which will provide better coordination, resources and momentum in the work for living waterways and a healthier ocean.

The board's assessment

Decision date: 2023-10-05

Total selection criteria: 925 points

The board's justification: A very important and well-formulated feasibility study that can have a great impact even outside our leader area. The project owner has succeeded in, with a bottom-up perspective, bringing in relevant actors at both local and regional level.
