Mountain bike trails
The project was implemented in LEADER Southeastern Skåne during the 2014-2024 programming period.
We advocate and lobby for more mountain bike trails and to find models for how to establish these, but really we just want to be out in the woods building more paths.
About the project
Previously, there were no specifically designed paths or trails for mountain biking in southeastern Skåne. At the same time, cycling on hiking trails and exercise tracks increased. Therefore, this project aimed to develop an infrastructure of paths and trails for the growing target group of cyclists. The purpose was to create quality-assured mountain bike trails in southeastern Skåne. Contribute to an attractive and health-promoting area to live in. Increase tourism and extend the tourist season. The long-term goal was to generate at least 50,000 annual visitors to the area within ten years thanks to good trails.
Activities
The project manager drove the entire work of developing the trails. In conversations with various stakeholders and during formal consultations. Through the development of work plans and applications for permits. Through the mobilization of volunteer workgroups and finally through the actual implementation with marking, clearing, and digging as well as signage and trail marking.
When all the trails were completed, they were compiled into a trail map that was distributed to all hubs and tourist offices in the area. The trails were also uploaded in the app Mountainbike United™ and on the project owner's website.
Results
The project created 15 new trails distributed at four different hubs. A total of 40 kilometers of marked bike trail was established in Smedstorp, Sjöbo Ora, Salsbjers udde, Ystads sandskog, and at the Adventure Camp in Sövde.
The project contributed to increased accessibility to nature. To increased spontaneous and organized cycling and to an expanded association life. To more visits from cyclists from other parts of the country and from Germany and Denmark. The project also contributed to fewer conflicts of interest between different outdoor groups such as hikers, riders, hunters, or birdwatchers and landowners. Thanks to the trails, the area can be marketed as a bike-friendly place, and the tourism industry has the opportunity to package offers around trail cycling in a sustainable way.
The project continues in the project owner's management, which is the main authority for the trails. But also through the network MTB Skåne and through four local work teams that continue to work on the maintenance and development of the trails.

The project is fully in line with the local development strategy with initiatives that contribute to increased growth in the tourism industry as well as new recreational activities in the countryside. The benefits of the project accrue to individuals as well as businesses, and the project increases the attractiveness of the leader area even outside the peak season.
