Natural Göinge
The project was carried out in Skånes Ess during the 2014-2024 program period.
The purpose of the Natural Göinge project is to make more people feel safe in nature, to make more people aware of the right of public access, and to make it easy to get out into the forest and land.
About the project
In the project, detailed maps of the natural areas around the villages of Östra Göinge are created, and then various activities are developed where these are used, such as map walks. Through these efforts, the project owner aims to promote public health, strengthen the area's identity-creating profile, and build knowledge around the sport of orienteering. The project has a particular focus on youth.
To implement the project, a project manager is hired at 20%, who, in addition to coordinating, is also responsible for administering courses and leading hikes. The areas to be mapped are determined, and maps are then produced. The maps are distributed to the public in Östra Göinge in printed form and can be found in digital form on the project's website. Furthermore, guided hikes/meetings are organized. To promote the initiative, an information meeting is held in each village and advertised.
The target group is everyone who lives and works in Östra Göinge. Special activities are aimed at individuals, schools, businesses, and other associations.
Results
We have conducted 118 meetings in the project between May 2017 and May 2018. A strong focus has been placed on youth, as 69 of these have been for school students. At the meetings, participants have been educated in map knowledge and how to navigate in nature using a map and compass, as well as informed about the right of public access. Meetings have also occurred in the same spirit after May 2018, but not to the same extent organized by project-affiliated individuals. During the spring of 2018, the project's focus shifted to promoting and organizing what has been called ”Fixed Controls.” In four different rounds, a total of 18 different areas around the municipality with fixed controls have been offered. In total, there have been 280 different controls to visit. Maps with these controls have been available digitally via the project's website, where one could also download mobile versions of the maps to easily and sustainably search for controls in a smart way.
Maps have also always been available in analog form at the municipality's libraries. Some maps have appeared as a centerfold in the local newspaper, and for the fourth and final round of fixed controls, all of the project's maps were distributed to all households in the municipality in a large map folder.
The project has created an extensive mapping material directly connected to all of the municipality's urban areas, and this is now easily accessible for both residents and visitors so that they can more easily venture out into nature on their own in the future. Students in the municipality's schools from grades 4-9 have repeatedly been able to participate in the project and have been educated to be able to seek out nature on their own in the future.
The entire project has received good feedback with many who have taken the opportunity to use our packages with fixed controls to visit interesting places in Skåne's Green Heart at their own time and pace.
We have also felt a great interest from the public before, during, and after the project with a strong local presence in connection with Tiomila in Glimåkra in April 2019. In the wake of the project, we feel an increased interest in the association's activities and upcoming recruitment courses are in high demand.

The project is identity-creating where the aim is to strengthen the brand for Göingebygden. In close collaboration with other associations and the municipality, as well as with broad engagement, accessibility to the Göinge nature is improved through the development of map materials for a large geographical area. The map materials will also be available digitally. Through various activities, the aim is to get more people out into nature in a safe way and learn more about their local area and what exists there, for example, various defined places with interesting history. In preparation for 10-mila in Skåne 2019, the goal is to build knowledge around orienteering to get more involved while also increasing interest in nature and the desire to spend time there sustainably. One of the overarching goals in Skåne's Ess strategy is ”identity-creating profile,” which this project contributes to. The project also aims to spread knowledge about the right of public access in several languages.
