Grinding Mill Gylsboda

An old grinding mill building in Gylsboda has been converted into a cultural center that houses artist workshops, an exhibition hall and a café.

By creating a cultural center, the association wanted to highlight Gylsboda, with its rich cultural history and the great interest in art, both of which have diabase as a common denominator. The community of Gylsboda has grown up around diabase mining, which started in the late 19th century. Shops, a bakery, a community center, etc. were built when diabase mining flourished. The mining is still active and the diabase has attracted several artists to the town.

One goal of the project was to make Gylsboda more attractive for visitors, tourists, active artists and craftsmen, for businesses, schools and associations. Through art, people of different ages, with different ethnicities and different backgrounds, both social and economic, meet, which invites developing collaborations.

With a broad and very large commitment, the premises have been carefully renovated, the surrounding area cleared of all wild vegetation and created a beautiful visitor destination. The renovation work began in the fall of 2016. The building has received new electricity and lighting, better insulation in the roof and windows, new flooring, new spaces for exhibitions, kitchen and staff space, toilets and work rooms. A parking lot has been built. The association can now offer workshop space for artists and the renovation enables art exhibitions all year round. To experience the environment and the open-air museum, visitors can borrow an electric bike.

Interest in Sliperiet has become very high, not least thanks to committed project participants. The process has been possible to follow daily via the chairman's blog and local media has had continuous reporting. The importance that the center has acquired is also visible in the fact that Sliperiet Gylsboda is used as a sales argument in real estate advertisements, where it is emphasized that there is a rich and vibrant cultural center in the area.

During the project period, several events have been organized that have attracted many visitors and the association continues to have ongoing activities booked. A collaboration with Sydresor has been initiated, which means that there will be bus trips to Gylsboda during the summer of 2019.

The project contributes to the creation of a living cultural center with a complete experience from early industrial history to today's reality in a unique environment. The project also has and intends to further develop a broad collaboration both within cultural history with diabase mining and within artistic activities, course activities with crafts, etc. The association aims to make Sliperiet an attractive visitor destination and an interesting complement to other activities in the area.
